Chirac Gets Smack-Down
Jacque Chirac suffered a humiliating defeat in regional elections. His party won in 1 province, while the opposition took 20. 20! Generally, I am happy to see Chirac taken down a peg. In this case, though, the opposition is the even more anti-American Socialists. Apparently the deciding issue was public dissatisfaction with the limited economic reforms that the government is pursuing. France's socialist excesses have resulted in 10% unemployment, pitiful economic growth, and growing budget deficits. The government has been moving to limit welfare payments and scale back public health benefits, but apparently the French would rather shoot themselves in the other foot as well. I really think that in 50 years France will not even be recognizable. It will look like a cross between Argentina and Morocco.
